Netflix movie Cam from 2018 is all about the world of camgirls where Alice (played by Madeline Brewer) is a young woman who works as a cam girl and broadcasts sexy shows from a studio that she has set up in her home. She has become obsessed with her rank on the site, hoping to be number 1 which is a spot currently held by another girl.
Alice performs all sorts of wild and sexy stunts during her live cam shows to boost her popularity until one morning when she waked up only to discover that all of her login information has been changed. But, somehow her account is still active and currently streaming. Curious, she logs into another account to watch the stream and sees a replica of herself and who is currently performing a show from a bath at her home studio. When she carefully enters her studio, she finds that not only is nobody there, but that the TV in her studio is playing the stream.
She now has to figure out what’s going on and solve the mystery of who is trying to replace her and how they have managed to make a complete copycat!
A Cam Girl Thriller
Cam is a thrilling film about sex work that feels interesting and most importantly authentic. That realism comes from writer Isa Mazzei, who is an ex-cam girl herself and how the movie is also reminiscent of a docudrama about sexwork rather than a thriller.
It is immensely atmospheric. Whether it’s the erotic during the live webcam shows or the drab reality of Alice’s life outside of her work, the film immerses you. The cast is really solid and Cam is an unexpected, and thrilling addition to modern horror. It’s a unique experiment and one that works really well. Highly recommended!
